Concirrus deepens ESG commitment through strategic partnership with 90 North Foundation to safeguard the Arctic Ocean

London, September 18th 2024 – Concirrus, the leading provider of AI-powered maritime insurance solutions, is proud to announce a partnership with the 90 North Foundation, reinforcing the company’s dedication to environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles. This collaboration represents a significant step in its ongoing focus on the protection and sustainable management of the Arctic Ocean, one of the world’s most vulnerable ecosystems.

90 North Foundation’s mission is to safeguard the biodiversity of the Arctic Ocean and ensure the long-term sustainability of its ecosystem services. The Foundation plays a key role in advancing sustainable development by lessening the harmful effects of marine activities, particularly from vessels navigating the Arctic’s fragile ecosystem. With Concirrus providing innovative, data-driven technology, the Foundation can focus on reducing vessel-induced stressors and mitigating risks to both native and migratory species, ensuring the preservation of the Arctic’s ecological balance.

Leveraging Concirrus’s technology for environmental impact

In collaboration with its research partners at The University of Exeter, 90 North Foundation will leverage Concirrus’ Quest One platform to gather crucial data on vessel activity and behaviours in the Arctic Ocean. By integrating Quest One into their research framework, the Foundation gain access to detailed insights into vessel behaviors, including tracking the routes, types, and operational patterns of ships navigating the Arctic. This data will be instrumental in assessing the environmental impact of maritime activities, with a particular focus on adherence to ESG standards.

The collaboration will enable the 90 North Foundation to produce actionable research that not only deepens our understanding of human impacts on the Arctic ecosystem but also informs and shapes international policies aimed at protecting this vital region. The insights derived from Quest One will support the Foundation’s efforts to advocate for stricter regulations and more sustainable practices in Arctic maritime operations, contributing to global conservation goals.

A commitment to responsible governance

For Concirrus, this partnership is a testament to their broader ESG commitments. By aligning technological capabilities with the conservation goals of the 90 North Foundation, Concirrus are taking a proactive role in supporting environmental protection while also promoting responsible governance in the maritime industry. Their involvement underscores the importance of corporate responsibility and the need for businesses to contribute positively to societal challenges.

Andrew Yeoman, Chief Executive Officer at Concirrus, commented on the partnership, stating,

“The work that Pen Hadow and the 90 North Foundation are doing is crucial for the sustainable future of the Arctic Ocean. As a company, Concirrus is deeply committed to ESG principles, and this partnership allows us to contribute meaningfully to the preservation of one of the world’s most important and delicate environments. By providing the insights generated by Quest One, we can support the Foundation’s efforts to influence policy and drive sustainable change in the maritime sector. We are excited to see what we can achieve together.”

Pen Hadow, Executive Director of 90 North Foundation, emphasised the importance of the partnership with Concirrus to the Foundation’s cutting-edge research on safeguarding the central Arctic Ocean.

“Concirrus is making available to 90 North Foundation mission-critical raw and processed data about all vessels and their movements in the Arctic Ocean. This data enables our research partners to integrate, quantify and forecast the impacts of vessel activities with existing research on Arctic marine biodiversity. The resulting spatial mapping of risks to individual species and ecosystems will inform the optimal conservation measures needed to protect the region’s vulnerable wildlife as its sea-ice habitat recedes.”

The 90 North Foundation has this week been announced as a member of the High Seas Alliance. The Alliance has over 50 members who are working towards protecting the planet’s international waters.

About 90 North Foundation

The 90 North Foundation was founded by explorer turned conservationist Pen Hadow. Twenty-one years ago, Pen was the first person to trek and swim solo, without resupply, across the icy Arctic Ocean from Canada to the North Geographic Pole. The feat hasn’t yet been repeated and probably won’t be due to a drop in sea-ice cover caused by warming resulting from global greenhouse gas emissions. In response to what he witnessed in the Central Arctic Ocean, Pen established the 90 North Foundation.  Along with Indigenous peoples, scientists, conservation organisations and policy-makers, the Foundation will advocate for measures to safeguard the Arctic Ocean’s biodiversity.
